Building on a leap of faith, May-June 2017 WORSHIP AVL

GBI Alam Sutera took advantage of underutilised space in a mall complex, maximising the physical space and technical infrastructure to draw a congregation where none previously existed. Richard Lawn Investigates. IT'S ENTIRELY PLAUSIBLE THAT THE town planners in Jakarta were so impressed with the 1989 movie Field of Dreams that they decided to create a new town in the western suburbs near Tangerang called Alam Sutera. In that film, an lowa corn farmer heard a voice telling him 'if you build it, he will come' and in doing so interpreted this as an instruction to build a baseball diamond in his fields. The relatively affluent Alam Sutera settlement is now home to 32.000 people. Nestled into Alam Sutera and designed by an international architect, the mall @alam sutera complex opened in December 2012 in a bid to entice middle class shoppers to its lifestyle stores and shops. The new development is taking some to attract the numbers desired to sustain all the retail outlets; when a bedding store had to close its doors, the malls management made a request to the GBI church for them to take the space so as to add a new dimension to its floor plan. Having agreed, GBI's leap of faith has paid off for both the church and the mall with the creation of PRJ-CK7 - better known as GBI Alam Sutera Mall. Having fully converted the old retail space into a sanctuary with adjacent children's classrooms, the building contractor also integrated acoustic control elements, including perforated rock wool and gypsum, throughout the converted development. A loudspeaker demonstration was then held in which four systems were tendered, for which an FBT Muse self-powered system was specified on account of its high power, compact for factor, even distribution and price-performance features. As a result PT Promedia Innovative Solutions was called upon to design, supply and install a full Muse turnkey audio system into the newly created 700-capacity sanctuary and four adjacent children's rooms. No stranger to the GBI fraternity, the Jakarta distributor and systems integrator laid the cabling in September 2016 in the full knowledge that the church had set a deadline for opening before Christmas. The main conduit runs overhead from the stage to the purpose-built rear control room. Sales engineer Teguh Prakoso - who also volunteers at the church - understood what system would suit the pastor, teachers, musicians and singers best, 'it was a hard shoot out as the other three brands were big names, but the FBT Muse line array scored highly with the judges for a room of these dimensions' comments Mr Prakoso.'Sourching the rest of the equipment was straightforward as I understand what all the participants wanted in order to create the best possible worship experience. Measuring 17m x 28m, the worshippers in the 8m high sanctuary receive even audio coverage courtesy of the eight Muse 210LA and dual Muse 118FSA low frequency cabinets in each L-R stereo array. Weighing 38,2kg each 210LA cabinet produces 90-degrees of horizontal dispersion, which is more than sufficient for a venue of such dimensions, "We made our predictions in EASE Focus but could only suspend seven 210LA per side initially as the cuiling height was 7m,'furthers general manager Yosua Yan Heriyanto, 'The church committee agreed and the general contractor obliged by extending the false ceiling above the stage by a further 1m. it FOH and monitor mixing is performed on an Allen & Heath dilive S5000 digital console located in the spacious, windowless control room. "The church is familiar with the Allen & Heath iLive platform and so they wanted to operate a console that they were familiar and confident with, 'furthers Mr Prakoso. The dLive is a 96k upgrade on the iLive for which the house engineers are familiar with the GUI and the layout, they appreciate the warm preamps, feel reassured with the dual-redundancy and are starting to benefit from the control and Dante recording options, The dLive control surface is connected to a DM64 MixRack that has been integrated into an onstage rack together with the DLM26 processors. The audio quality is extremely good and the platform suits GBI's needs perfectly in terms of inputs and outputs. An M-Dante card has been inserted into the MixRack providing digital audio networking options with 64 channels of bi-directional audio. The interface was specified at GBI Alam Sutera Mall of multi-track recording, primarily for allowing the musicians and singers to monitor their individual performances following a service and for recording special shows. The video production team also benefit from the Dante multitrack recording capabilities offered when synchronizing their own video editing as well as creating. The video production installed by V2 draws heavily on an array of Datavideo products, supplied by PT Harmoni Yogja Inti Sellars. Measuring 8m in width x 4.5m in height, a Unilumens 16,9 resolution LED screen at the rear of the stage provides the entire congregation with HD content. A 6-channel SE-2200 HD video controller lies at the core of the operations. Prior to scaling the final picture quality it transmits to the LES screen, it receives dedicated feeds from the Datavideo fixed cameras, in addition to the content provided from four PC computers. a Blu-ray player and Chromakey text overlay from an HDR-200 harddrive-based video recorder. The two fixed and two portable cameras are controlled from the RMC-180PTZ camera control unit, whilst an ITC-100 eight-way talkback system allows the mobile A/V operators to communicate with the control rom personnel individually or simultaneously on all channels. Furthermore, live video for sharing with any oversoil congregation, together with recordings of services, can be made on the SE-1200MU HD six-channel video switcher, which marries video inputs with digital content. Operation is enabled on of the four PCs together with the RMC-260 control panel. The lighting blends six PRC XR330 moving head at the front of the stage with Focus LED moving heads at the rear. Wall-mounted and overhead Fresnels and PAR cans add varying hues and moods, all of which are mixed on an Avolites Tiger Touch II console. The multimedia room at the rear of the venue is a hive of activity during the services, although nothing is left to chance with the services well-rehearsed in advance. Like most modern churches, GBI appeals to its children and youth by engaging them with interactive classrooms. The four classrooms, with names including Jerusalem and Nazareth, draw various age groups in a corridor outside the main sanctuary. None of the classrooms have been spared any A/V expense as the gear is used to fully engage with its young audience. An array of professional equipment including Datavideo SE700 switchers, 1155-inch LED screens, 84-inch HD screens and Allen & Heath Zed22 FX mixers blend in with the colourful customized furniture. In term of loudspeakers, an assortment of FBT self-powered cabinets including the X-Pro15A and X-Pro12A speaker, X-Lite 12A and StageMaxx monitors and X-Sub18A subwoofers provide more than enough SPL for the young attendess. Twenty-three years in the making and Alam Sutera has grown into a large, affluent community. The church took a risk in locating a new branch in the underused shopping mall, but that decision has been fully vindicated. Church membership has grown enormously since they opened their doors in early January, attests Mr Heriyanto, From March, three Sunday services will be held to cater for the increase in worshippers. As in Field of Dreams, it would appear thar the GBIS built its church in the knowledge that its worshippers would come.

PT Promedia Innovative Solution equips Indonesia's Ice Palace

INDONESIA: Founded in 1948 in the Korean Republic, the Lotte Group has succeeded in becoming the country's number one retailer. Since 2009, it has embarked on an ambitious programme of overseas expansion, including the Group's first investment in Indonesia. Partnered with PT Ciputra Adigraha, Lotte Group spearheaded the Ciputra World Jakarta project and since its opening has managed and operated the entire mall. Constituting less than one per cent of Ciputra World Jakarta's retail area, a very unique 618 sq-m space recently opened on the third floor. In an equatorial climate, the Ice Palace earns second glances from passers-by on account of its mock ice sculptures and glacial cavernous entrance. The concept is based upon the Swiss Jungfrau and features a mock snow-covered area with ice sculptures. In actual fact, it is an acoustically treated venue that can host 300 seated or 500 standing guests for live musical performances, mini concerts, seminars, corporate workshops and private functions. Korean consultant Peter Choi worked closely with Jakarta-based systems integrator and equipment supplier Promedia Innovative Solution in providing a full audio system for the venue's multipurpose needs. 'Despite the difficulties in distance and language - as we could only communicate in English - we executed the precise plans of both the architect and designer,' confirmed Promedia Innovative Solutions director Yosua Yan Heriyanto, who took on the role of project manager for Ice Palace. 'This included sourcing equipment that would provide audio-video entertainment for any clients wishing to hire the venue, whilst seamlessly blending into the white decor.' A front of house d&b audiotechnik system managed to tick all the boxes for Mr Choi. This consists of ceiling suspended L-R arrays each comprising four Ti10 units per side, augmented by three E8 speakers as front fills positioned on the lip of the stage and two ceiling suspended E12 speakers providing centre fills. The lower frequencies are boosted with the addition of four T-Subs located under the stage in cardioid configuration. Ten D6 amplifiers power the entire system, for which the R70 Rope software has been integrated to allow remote DSP management. In addition, a JBL surround system has been added for cinema screenings, consisting of six wall-mounted 8340a cabinets also finished in white. A large inventory of Shure wired and ULX wireless microphones are on offer for the various performances, including a KSM137 condenser and SM94 cardioid condenser. In addition to Beta 58 models, the wireless performances can also adopt a DPA d:fine 4088 ear-set. The rear control room is home to an Avid Venue-SC48 digital 48-channel console, while performances are monitored via Genelec 8020a speakers. Sources include a Tascam CD-RW901 recorder and Denon DN-D4500 CD player, whilst a Furman PL8-CE power conditioner ensures surge protection. A white LC-XT5 Eiki projector receives its video transmission signals via an Analog way Smart Vu processor, for which the computer graphics are fed through a Kramer VP-6 distribution amplifier en-route. The Ice Palace unusually blends Korean and Indonesian cultures to perfection. Adorned in neutral white, the enticing venue can stage any show that an individual or company conceptualises by simply adding colour or EQ, volume, imagery and lighting.

Integrity Convention Center (ICC) Upgraded System to d&b J&V Series

Having resided at the Integrity Convention Centre (ICC) in Jakarta's Mall Mega Glodok Kemayoran since 2008, the GBI Praise Revival Jesus (PRJ) has evolved significantly. Under the watchful leadership of Pastor DR. Janto Simkoputera, MD, PhD., the eighth and ninth levels serve as the main church headquarters for eight smaller CK7 satellites in the Indonesian capital city. Just as the congregations have grown, the A/V technology within rented space that is the tenth story grand ballroom attempts to keep pace with the worshipping requirements. Having called upon several suppliers to upgrade the visual aspects of the worship experience in 2014 - including PT Harmoni Yogia Into Sellars with Datavideo switchers and recorders - the GBI PRJ committee recently turned to Promedia Solutions (PMS) to enhance the audio system. Enhancement of the stage monitoring together with side, rear and front fills dictated the supply of a d&b audiotechnik system four years previously. Supplementing the FOH Q series speakers, MAX12 wedge monitors, six ceiling suspended Qi7 delays, five Qi10 front fills and a single V10P central cluster powered by D12 amplifiers literally filled the gaps. Having served for ten years, the Q series has been relocated to serve in one of the CK7 satellites, whilst an extensive J-series provides intelligibility and even dispersion within GBI-PRJ. The L-R arrays comprise of six J8 and two J12 three-way cabinets per side, providing 80 and 120 horizontal dispersion respectively. The wide room dimensions require side fills for its' capacity congregation and these are catered for with the addition of four per side V8 cabinets. Low frequency extension is further enhanced in the form of six J-SUB and two J-INFRA Subs ground stacked in front of the stage. Having dispensed with their in-ear monitoring system, the musicians and choir favoured a wedge speaker solution and this has is achieved via 14 low profile MAX2 and two M4 models.

FBT Appoints Promedia as Indonesia's Distributor

INDONESIA: This year's Pro Light and Sound exhibition turned out to be as busy as ever for FBT Elettronica SpA. In addition to launching a plethora of new products, including the PromaxX, Ventis, X-PRO and Vertus CS1000 loudspeaker series, the Italian manufacturer also agreed distribution terms and conditions with PT Promedia Innovative Solution to represent its entire product range throughout Indonesia. Originally founded in 2007 and headed by Yosua Yan Heriyanto, the independent Jakarta-based distributor also provides systems integration services specialising in sound system design to its well-established network throughout the archipelago. The distributor's other brands include d&b audiotechnik, DPA Microphones and TASCAM. 'FBT continues to develop its export business at a great pace and as such we understand that our relationships are fundamental to growth,' explained FBT export manager Roberto Mataloni. 'For FBT, the installation market has become a priority. As such, our distributor partners have to align with our vision and help us to achieve common goals. Having fully assessed the situation in Indonesia, we came to the conclusion that Promedia Innovative Solutions should partner with us there as they offer a multitude of business opportunities across various verticals. Having known Mr Yan Heriyanto for some years, I am aware that his team has focussed their energies on establishing highly-respected European pro audio brands with a great professional approach. FBT will benefit from Promedia's unique skills in positioning the brand in different and wider market segments offering a larger product catalogue to satisfy all demands.' On his trip to Frankfurt's Pro Light and Sound, Mr Yan Heriyanto was accompanied by his colleagues Teguh Prakoso (technical manager) and William Widjaya (sales manager) from Jakarta. The trio concluded their business with FBT at the factory's headquarters in Recanati near Ancona immediately following the four-day exhibition. 'Together with d&b audiotechnik, we can now satisfy our customers in the medium to high-end market,' commented Mr Yan Heriyanto. 'Currently, there is a good brand awareness of FBT in terms of price performance and best value. Having visited the facility, we came away seriously impressed with their modern, highly mechanised production, tooling facilities, skilled technical staff and company ethos. We're not box shifting here and we can now fully utilise both our excellent corporate and personal relationship with FBT in order to develop new business.' Prior to the exhibition, the Indonesian three-piece visited Heilbronn in Germany confirming its appointment by beyerdynamic. 'We've been interested in the beyerdynamic brand for some time, as we saw it had a market in Indonesia in spite of the price being largely uncompetitive,' further explained My Yan Heriyanto. 'Following some changes in their worldwide distribution and in particular in South East Asia, the timing for us to start trading was perfect. Brand awareness in the MI, headphones and conferencing sectors has always been very good, but we are both passionate and confident that we can further extend beyerdynamic's reach. We experienced the same with d&b audiotechnik when we took on the brand by making their products more accessible and prices more competitive. Now that we are working closely with Asia Pacific director of sales and marketing Kamal Mahtani in Singapore, Promedia Innovative Solutions will extend a greater market share in Indonesia with this direct factory link.'

Short overviews of the Quinta TB wireless boundary and new Orbis wired conferencing system software were provided prior to their official launch at Infocomm in Las Vegas next week.

"Singing President Went on Digital"
Indonesian's Presidential Palace ProAudio Installation

It came from one of those requests which you could never ever reject, the president's. Five vast areas stretching from the terraces (north and south), the dining room, Hall of Indonesia, and the Presidential Palace auditorium metamorphosed from analogue era to digital age, when Digital Steering Array (DSA) played the big role. Sneaking in, Chris Andre lets you peek on the sophisticated tuning inside. The exclusive request was mentioned in August 2007, though it was officially after Idul-Fitri holiday in October 2008 when Promedia Innovative Solution, led by Yosua Yan Heriyanto, started working on the one-month project of Presidential Palace's audio revolution. "Two major problems we had to encounter initially were the impractical analogue system that needs to be replaced soon and the fragility of the one-hundred-year-old building," explained Mr. Heriyanto, "but then we came to the conclusion that the only way-out was to install few numbers of DSA with digital mixing console using slim ethersound cables. " These ideas quickly assured both Totom Kodrat and Dr. Joko Sarwono, the palace's audio and acoustic consultants, and found the installation accomplished by the end of November. Each area pertains to different functions and occasions. While both terraces are regular venue for outdoor exhibition, the Hall of Indonesia is what most citizens preview if any press conferences take place. Suitable to deal with acoustic-challenged environment, a couple of EAW DSA 250i full-range systems have been given full trust to take care of each terrace, replacing interspersed mini-speakers available on many corners. Their flexible vertical beam-width alignment covers any angles from 15 to 120 degree as well as controlling frequency to the lowest limit of 300 Hz; consequently, this targeted sound beam option expands the previous audio concept which only stresses on having sound dispersed ubiquitously. The next installation is four EAW DSA 250i occupying the ceiling corners of the Hall of Indonesia to render clear speech deliverance as it also features 19-inch Earthworks. FM500 Podium Microphone that will capture the president's message impeccably regardless the proximity level. The dining room requires careful measure considering its location besieged by the family's private rooms, yet the auditorium gains most attention as it functions variously, ranging from as the inauguration venue for newly elected republic president to an entertainment site where traditional musicians amuse visiting guests. Similar to the prior hall, the dining room is equipped with four EAW DSA 250i to ensure great music flowing in; Mr. Heriyanto added, "Our president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, really appreciates music so that it's not too much to have four great loudspeakers indulge this particular area." One 16-input/16-output Allen&Heath IDR-8 DSP processor management also appears shyly on one corner, said to be the key that allows independent audio functioning without relying on the assistance over the master mixing set in the auditorium. "We're putting IDR-8 on every area besides the auditorium where Allen&Heath iLive 112 settles all the problems. This means, the terrace may have the audio control entirely on IDR-8 whenever it needs to work separately, but simultaneous sound can also be managed in all areas from the master control iLive." Mr. Heriyanto later showed the medium-size auditorium that collects six photographic paintings of all Indonesia presidents and has over 200 golden-lacquered audience chairs on sprawling novel red rug that tickles your steps along the way. A meter distance from the stage, two slim white proportions of mid-high EAW DSA 250i and low-mid DSA 230i nestled on the side pillars, looking fantastic for the interior and also able to emerge incredible sound due to their combination together with 19-inch RCF TTS 28 subwoofers, slipped under the stage panel, and iLive with ethersound connection. One final touch was to resolve poor acoustic quality in the auditorium. "Sometimes the president invites bands to perform here onstage. He loves music, and he even has an album, remember?" a justifying comment which unfortunately put on more pressure to the acoustic installation. Luckily, 52 pieces of 0.5-square-meter teakwood panel served the answer; it was BADTM Panel. Binary Amplitude DiffsorborTM (BADTM) offered diffusing absorber in a flat design panel enduring appropriate combination of absorption, reflection, and diffusion - though not necessarily made from teakwood, i.e. the only kind of wood permitted to suit with the palace construction. After everything was set, the auditorium sounded so classy, excelled particularly at delivering clear-articulated speech and easy-sway strumming jazz bands. Besides all of the magnificent items installed, Mr. Heriyanto proudly revealed his exquisite feature that took presidential palace into a higher level. The iLive had been synched to support wi-fi operation; a sound engineer then could easily open a PC tablet to adjust any faders in those five different areas. "Actually, it is a new technology applied in this country," said Mr. Heriyanto who then summed up, "it's just the right equipment at the right time and for the right president, someone who enjoys and appreciates sound."

Trans Studio Bandung Theme Park's Audio Installation

When Trans Studio was opened in the Indonesian city of Makassar inSouth Sulawesi, Indonesia in 2009 it was the world's third-largest indoor theme park. It's now number four as the same group recently opened Trans Studio theme park in Bandung, which is the biggest in Asia. The Mega Development Project is an integrated development, comprising not only of the indoor theme park, shopping mall, supermarket and hotel. The bigger they come, the bigger the sound reinforcement requirements and the challenges that go with it. Chairul Tanjung is the founder and the owner of Para Group owning the Bank Mega and television broadcasting company, Trans Corp which operates private television stations Trans TV and TV7. As such, it is the first television station in history to own an indoor theme park and has taken advantage of this unique fact by promoting its' television shows throughout the 4.2 hectare space. As such, many of the rides in Trans Studio are adopted from TransTV's and Trans7's shows. The developers have certainly invested wisely as the catchment area for the theme park is wide. Not only do crowdsflock from Jakartaseeking the cool mountain air of Bandung, but Malaysians are also attracted by direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. As a part of the entertainment, Trans Studio has a mono train in addition to 20 features and amusement rides in three thematic areas: Studio Central, which bears Hollywood and New York themes; Lost City, an area featuring adventurous rides and Magic Corner, which is decked with mid-century European decor. The theme park includes several performing art venues such as the Trans City Theatre, which showcases Broadway-style spectacles, and the Amphitheatre, showcasing shows and hosting parades with international and local artists.Yamaha Racing Coaster dashes at 120km per hour during its first 3.5 seconds and reaches an altitude of 49m above the ground before it reverses to the starting point at the same speed. There's also the Giant Swing, which is a ride that swings its riders 18m into the air on two pendulum arms. The theme park also has plenty of non-ride entertainment including 'special effects action', which is an exhibition that depicts behind-the-scenes in movie filming. Marvel Superheroes 4D is a simulator that features superheroes such as Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man trying to save Indonesia, India and America. As an audio supplier and systems integrator, Promedia Innovative Solutions (PIS) has enjoyed a long standing working relationship with the owner Mr. Tanjungfor numerous years. Their work to date with the group includes supplying audio broadcast equipment to Trans TV and Trans 7, installing the Coffee Bean outlets with Genelec speaker systems throughout Indonesia and of course outfitting of Trans Studio Makassar. These references helped them secure the tender to supply and install the sound reinforcement system throughout the theme park. PIS also designed the BGM system in conjunction with Trans Studio director BudimanWijaya and senior audio division manager HendriAnanto. Despite the presence of numerous other contractors on site all desperately aware that the 18 June opening day deadline was getting ever closer, a team of eleven technicians and two engineers from PIS only had seven weeks in which to complete the project. They coordinated their efforts closely with the interior designers, ride engineers and acousticians, together with the mechanical, electrical and civil engineering contractors. They diligently stuck to their task often working around the clock towards the end, for which over 400 surface mount, line array and portable speakers were installed into the various zonedthemes of Trans Studio Bandung. The theatre's plays and parades adapt the local culture, such as the 'Kabayan Goes to Hollywood' show, which is based on a famous Sundanese fictional character named Kabayan. The 400-seat theatre is served by two suspended RCF NX L23-A compact line arrays consisting of three cabinets in each array, supplemented by single NX S25-A dual 15-inch and single NX 21-S 21-inch subwoofers per side installed within the lip of the stage. The self powered system is mixed on an Allen & Heath. R72 digital console via an iDR-32 Mix Rack, whilst speaker processing is performed on a Sabine NAV4802 processor. A similar but larger version of this set up has been adopted for the live amphitheatre which hosts a live musical band several times per day. Each L-R array consists of six RCF NX L23-A cabinets and there are a total of three NX 21-S and three NX S21A subwoofers supplementing the lower frequencies. Mixing is performed from an Allen & heath iLive T-80 console. 'The Trans Studio technicians really like the console as its' very intuitive to use and there are presets, which make it simple to configure according to the show you wish to mix,' offered PIS managing director Yosua Yan Heriyanto. The background music system is a simple set up mainly utilising a music source taken from an Alcorn McBride 8 Traxx player, for which 16 channels of audio can be stored on each compact flash or iPod in a continual loop. The resultant mixers are then fed into Allen & Heath iDR-8 16 x 16 matrix mixers and appropriately zoned. EAW DX1208 processors with 24 presets then apply EQ filters, gates, compressors/limiters, auto-mixing, priority assignment, delay, gain and crossovers to the sources depending on the zone. The signal is them amplified via EAW Commercial CXA80 80W amplifiersat 100-volt output in addition to CAM80 integrated audio mixer and 80W power amplifierswith six actively balanced combination mic/line inputs before being output to the EAW speakers. 'We chose the EAW SMS2124 and SMS1990 surface mount speakers as they are very powerful and our technicians found them easy to install,' furthered Mr. Heriyanto. 'With the clip-fit wall-mount units, you can then simply clip the loudspeakers onto the clip-fit arm in one motion once the wall-mount units have been placed into on a wall. The audio connection is then terminated and the loudspeaker is live. The wall-mount unit offers a tilt positioning for precise aiming.' In zones where the screams and ambient background noise is high, higher power active Mackie SRM450 speakers have been affixed to columns. 'They cut through the noise of the theme park really well,' grinned Mr. Heriyanto. In the final run up the park opening, the PIS team would be confronted with almost changing plans on a daily basis. 'Our team at Trans Studio had to keep up with the highly dynamic environment they were working in and upgrade the system at any given time,' furthered Mr. Heriyanto. 'Some contractors simply couldn't keep up and you wouldn't see them afterwards. We had to compromise our ideal speaker positions owing to restrictions, other contractors and aesthetics. With the Mackie powered speakers, the long distances from amplifier rooms resulting in loss of signal for passive speakers wasn't a problem and you don't need to equalise these as they run flat. Like the RCF ART500 speakers, they're plug and play and for me are the best sounding paging speakers money can buy.' Mr. Heriyanto and the PIS team haven't finished their work yet at Bandung Trans Studio theme park as a six star 1,000 room hotel is now nearing completion on site. Further theme parks are being forecast to open across Indonesia in future including an even larger one in Jakarta. Given the high standards the PIS team has set in this instance, it would appear that their relationship with Trans Studio is in its early stages.

New stars shine brightly and audibly for the worshippers of Salatiga

That once glistening, newly-installed A/V system soon loses its' lustre over the years. Whilst the components naturally decay over a period of time, the technology becomes increasingly more obscure before an ever expectant audience. Understandably, houses of worship have to juggle their finances accordingly. For some, it may be more prudent to address individual system challenges each year, whilst for others an all-encompassing upgrade can be conducted each decade. Fitting the latter category, Bethany Church Salatiga is a vibrant and diverse 1,000-seat house of worship in central Java that opted for a full audio system refurbishment. At the time of the last refit in 2003, the services were a little less musical in nature and witnessed by a smaller congregation. As such, an active Mackie SR1530 three-way loudspeaker / SWA1801 subwoofer system mixed on an analogue Allen & Heath GL3800-840 console was deemed more than sufficient for their needs. Following a review, it was decided that the church would benefit by adding a new loudspeaker system together with the latest FOH and monitor mixing functionality in the main sanctuary. Additionally, several varying traditional, modern and youth services had to be accounted for each day, as did the broadcast feeds for its radio station. Ultimately, Bethany Salatiga Church elected to become one of the first Indonesian houses of worship to install Allen & Heath's dLive S7000 digital control surface and DM64 MixRack together with a combination of eight ME-U and ME-1 personal monitor mixers. PT ProMedia Innovative Solution played the role of supplier and installer with support coming from distributor Kairos Multi Jaya. 'Our church had been using a GL3300 every day for the past 13 years without any problems, so we knew Allen & Heath was reliable,' explained Bethany's technician Samuel Aderiel Susanto. 'With the demands of a growing church community, dLive's digital features will ensure that we are able to manage all of the audio challenges, such as live recording.' 'For a sound engineer that is new to digital mixing, dLive really makes my job easier as it's very easy to use and intuitive,' furthers sound engineer Wegig Satrija Puruhita. 'Apart from having all the features you'd expect on a digital console, it also has many practical assets, such as a port for the musicians' ME personal monitoring system. As a bonus, the console also looks beautiful - you can tell that every knob and fader was chosen with great consideration. The church hosts many different types of service and the engineer needs to consider the requirements of every musician and worshipper, which changes from one service to the next. With dLive's recall options, the hard work is done and the audio is reassuringly consistent each time.' As the number of worshippers has increased over thirteen years, so has their desire to be musically entertained with higher SPL's whilst receiving highly intelligible speech. A d&b audiotechnik V series consisting of four V8 far-fills and four V12 near fills suspended in a L-R configuration future proofs the church's needs beyond the next decade. Augmented by four V-SUB subwoofers configured in cardioid mode, both the power and DSP management is provided courtesy of single d&b audiotechnik four-channel 30D DSP and D80 DSP power amplifiers. Both the V8 and V12 cabinets combine dual 10-inch LF drivers with a horn loaded 8-inch MF driver and two 1.4-inch exit HF compression drivers. Whilst the V8 provides 80 horizontal constant directivity dispersion control down to 250 Hz, the V12 has been designed to offer a wider 120 coverage. Setting up and configuring the three-way passive system was almost effortless according to PT ProMedia Innovative Solution general manager Yosua Heriyanto. 'd&b's ArrayCalc makes life considerably easier, ' Mr Heriyanto enthuses. 'Following the inputting of the sanctuary dimensions and calling up a room template, ArrayCalc automatically provided all the splay angles and array heights. Furthermore, ArrayCalc allowed us to export all the predicted system settings, such as time alignments, filtering and EQ into the 30D and D80 amplifiers.' Both amplifiers can be accessed on the d&b Remote network either via Ethernet using the Open Control Architecture protocol (OCA) or CAN-Bus using RJ45 connectors. Although the LEDs on the front panels display power, input, data and mute status, both amplifiers can be controlled using the integrated web interface from a browser or the R1 remote control software. Furthermore, the LoadMatch function electrically compensates for the properties of loudspeaker cable used, ensuring a stable output when used with inconsistent weak mains supplies. The introduction of ME-U and ME-1 personal monitors has ensured the musicians are contributing lower SPL's towards the congregation. However, this has been balanced by an additional eight Mackie SRM450 stage monitors serving the needs of the choir in addition to two d&b Max stage monitors dedicated for the worship leaders. Clearly recognising his own voice from the sleek profile Max wedges, Pastor Bambang Hengky Driyanto expressed his admiration with the overall upgrade. 'We didn't realise how much we'd benefit from both the Allen & Heath analogue to digital upgrade and the installation of a d&b loudspeaker system. Whether you're using it or listening to it, it's like changing your car from a Toyota Innova to a Ferrari.'

A New Sanctuary of GBI PRJ PLUIT CK7 at Pluit Village Mall

the SE-1200MU HD six-channel video switcher, which marries video inputs with digital content. Operation is enabled on one of the four PC's together with the RMC-260 control panel. The lighting blends XC200 moving heads at the front of the stage with Focus LED moving heads at the rear. Overhead fresnels and par cans add varying hues and moods, all of which are mixed on an Avolites Tiger Touch II console. Like most modern churches, GBI appeals to its' children and youth by engaging them with interactive classrooms. Three classrooms draw various age groups in an outdoor corridor outside the main sanctuary, where the A/V expenses have continued to roll to entertain and educate the young audience. An array of professional equipment including beyerdynamic TG500 wireless microphones, Datavideo SE6500 switchers, 100-inch LED and 84-inch HD screens, Mackie ProFX22 mixers blend in with the colourful customised furniture. In terms of loudspeakers and monitors, an assortment of FBT self-powered cabinets including the X-Pro12A speakers and X-Lite 12A and X-Sub18A subwoofers provide more than ample SPL for the young attendees. 'In addition, there is another church that practises above GBI-CK7 Pulit every Sunday,' further elucidates Mr Heriyanto. 'It was necessary to insert acoustic absorbers to minimise LF emissions. However, the site had been disused for a year and so air conditioning had not been working over that time and as a result the room was very humid and damp. We couldn't use the adhesives for inserting the acoustic treatment, so the addition of dehumidifiers was essential for completing the project in time for Christmas. We then arranged a different Sunday order of service with the neighbouring church so there was no conflict. Ultimately, the Pastor is comfortable and there are no vibrations or acoustic problems.'
